Jambu is a native plant of the Brazilian Amazon, widely used in the traditional cuisine of the northern region of the country. It is appreciated for its distinctive flavor and local anesthetic effect due to the presence of spilanthol, a chemical compound that causes a numbing sensation when in contact with mucous membranes. Because of this compound, jambu is also used for infusing beverages and in the preparation of cosmetics, being highly valued and known outside Brazil, with dozens of patents registered for this substance.
