The Science of Strands: Identifying Your Hair Texture and How to Care for It

You’ve likely noticed the incredible diversity of hair types around the world. The differences go far beyond color; they are rooted deep within the structure of each strand. Whether your hair is straight, wavy, curly, or coily, each texture possesses a unique personality and specific needs. Identifying your type is the first step toward unlocking your hair’s full potential.

Join us as we explore the world of hair textures and the essential care routines for every type!

Why is it important to know your hair's texture?

Two primary factors determine your hair's shape: genetics and keratin. These are deeply interconnected. Your genes dictate how keratin is distributed along the hair shaft; keratin, in turn, provides the structural shape. Generally, the higher the keratin concentration in the hair’s core, the straighter the strand. A more varied distribution leads to curls and coils.

Knowing your texture is vital because it dictates:

  • Which active ingredients your hair craves.

  • The best techniques for washing, detangling, and drying.

  • The most effective steps for your personalized hair care routine.

Whether you are going through a hair transition or simply want to elevate your current look, understanding your texture is your foundation for success.

The 4 Main Hair Textures

Hair is professionally categorized into four main types, with sub-classifications ranging from A (finer/looser) to C (thicker/tighter).

  • Type 1: Straight Straight hair lies flat from root to tip without any visible wave.

    • 1A: Extremely fine, thin, and struggle to hold volume.

    • 1B: Medium thickness with a bit more body.

    • 1C: Thick, dense strands that may have a slight bend at the ends.

  • Type 2: Wavy Sitting perfectly between straight and curly, wavy hair typically follows an "S" pattern.

    • 2A: Fine, soft waves that are easy to style but can easily be weighed down.

    • 2B: More defined "S" waves, often prone to frizz from the mid-lengths down.

    • 2C: Thick, voluminous waves that border on curls but lack a full spiral.

  • Type 3: Curly This type forms clear spirals or ringlets, ranging from loose loops to tight corkscrews.

    • 3A: Large, shiny, and well-defined loops.

    • 3B: Springy, voluminous curls that start right at the root.

    • 3C: Densely packed, tight corkscrew curls with significant volume.

  • Type 4: Coily Coily hair is naturally drier and more fragile, featuring tight "Z" shaped zig-zags or tiny spirals.

    • 4A: Tight, visible spirals that are soft and springy.

    • 4B: Sharp zig-zag patterns with less definition and a coarser feel.

    • 4C: Extremely tight, fragile coils with a high "shrinkage" factor and a need for intense moisture.

How to Identify Your Texture

To find your match, observe your hair in its most natural state: dry and free of any styling products.

The "Strand Test" Method: Wash your hair with shampoo, apply a light leave-in, and divide it into small sections. Wrap a section around your index finger, release it, and observe:

  • Stays straight? Type 1.

  • Open "S" shape? Type 2.

  • Closed "S" spiral? Type 3.

  • "Z" shape or tight coil? Type 4.

Note: It is very common to have multiple textures on one head (e.g., wavy on top, curly underneath).

Care Tips Based on Texture

  • Straight Hair: Because natural oils from the scalp travel easily down straight strands, this type can become greasy quickly. Use lightweight products and wash more frequently to maintain volume.

  • Wavy Hair: Focus on definition without weight. Use wave activators, gels, or light leave-ins to enhance the "S" pattern and control frizz.

  • Curly Hair: Spirals are prone to tangling and dryness. This type thrives on moisture-rich nourishment. Heavier creams and oils are essential for defining curls and sealing in shine.

  • Coily Hair: The tight coils prevent natural oils from reaching the ends, making this the most fragile type. A routine of deep hydration, intense nourishment (LOC method), and oil-rich products is crucial for health and length retention.

Your hair is a unique reflection of you. By adjusting your routine to meet your specific texture's needs, you ensure your strands stay healthy, vibrant, and powerful.
